Genre is the main category of a film, the different types of genres are: Action, horror, thriller, romance, western and Sci-Fi. 

Genre is important for both consumers and media producers and is used to match films to audiences. By producing films in a certain genre filmmakers can appeal to a specific audience. Consumers can make choices about media and the films they are willing to watch and media producers can create text for a specific audience.

Sub-genre is a category within a genre, and these are used to give a deeper understanding of the film. Sub-genres are sub-classes for the larger category of main film genres. Examples of sub-genres are 'chick' flicks, courtroom dramas, detective/mystery films, disaster films, supernatural films , fantasy films and many more.

Hybrid genre is a genre that blends themes and elements from two main genres together. Hybrid genres are used to attract a wide range of different audiences and this results in film companies making more money. A few examples of films that consist of two different genres are Ted (2012), which consists of comedy and fantasy, Heist (2015) which includes elements of action and thriller and Click which consists three different types of genres which are comedy, drama and fantasy.

Ideas that are associated with different types of genres (action, horror, thriller, romance, western and Sci-Fi). Things that are associated with action genre are things like stunts, explosions, fighting and crashes, violence and physical feats. Ideas that are associated with horror movies are things such as the dark, death, scary environments, elicit fear, suspense and crawly things. For thriller, some elements that would be associated with this genre would be suspense, excitement, surprise, anxiety and anticipation. A romance genre would consist of love stories/falling in love, affairs, emotion, marriage, emotional ending/optimistic ending, spiritual story and relationships. Ideas that could be associated with western films would be cowboys, bad guys, sheriffs, Americans, western settlers, wilderness/nature/vast landscape and ranches. As the last genre of Sci-Fi, there are multiple ideas that could be associated with this genre for example contact with aliens, space travel, end of humanity, the future, the past/history, language, avatars, weapons in science fiction, time travel, teleportation, different abilities (mind control, invisibility, telepathy) and parallel universe.
