How tension is created in opening thriller from a sequence made last year

Opening scene

For this task I worked with Fred and we made a presentation on how tension was created in an opening scene from a thriller made last year by a student at Hurtwood House. This thriller was called Claudia.

Mise-en-scene of a film poster

 Film Poster

This film poster is from the movie US. This movie is about a family on vacation in Santa Cruz, the Wilson family. The family is then attacked by a family of four. They realise that the people attacking them look very much like them. This poster has created a sense of emptiness but also a sense of fear and danger. This poster creates the sense of danger as the person who is in this image is wearing red, red signifies danger and a sense of foreboding and that something bad is going to happen. This automatically tells us that this is some sort of horror and thriller movie. The only features that are visible in this image are the persons eyes, nose and mouth, you are unable to see the person hair and in a way this dehumanises the person and also creates the sense of emotionless, as you can see there is a tear that has fallen down the subjects face without having any facial expressions which gives character information and tells us that they are either the villain or one of the bad characters in this movie this also conveys the type of emotions throughout this movie. The positioning of this ‘character’ in this image is directly in the centre on the poster and the ‘character’ is the main focal point which leads the viewers eyes directly at the centre of the page as there is nothing else for their eyes to wonder to. The lighting in this poster is very dark and under exposed as you can see in the background. The setting where this image must have been taken would have been somewhere that did not have a lot of light access or could have been taken in a studio with a black backdrop. The contrast between the black background and the red play suit draws more attention to the face in the middle of the poster and also creates a sense of eeriness. The objects within this frame is the model who is holding a mask but also the hand wrap this is around their arm which also allows the viewer to question why they have that. The mask that the ‘character’ is holding across the side of their face makes the viewer intrigued to what’s behind the mask or why they are holding one in the first place, this can lure the viewer in and grab their attention leading them to want to actually watch this movie. The way the ‘character’ is looking directly into the lens of the camera automatically builds tension and comes across as if they are almost looking directly into your eyes which is patronising and very intense.  The editing that must have been used to create this image would have been to make sure the main focal point was the persons face and to make sure that the ‘characters’ face fades into the background, creating a uneasy feeling but also allowing the viewer to question what this movie could be about. From seeing this movie poster, I would straight away be curious as to what this movie is about and would want to watch it.

My Favourite Film Review

Shutter Island

- This film was released 12th March 2010.
-  The studio that produced this film was Phoenix Pictures.

- The writers of this film are Laeta Kalogridis (screenplay) and Dennis Lehave (novel). The director of this film is Martin Scorsese and he has also directed The Irishman, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, Raging Bull, Casino, Mean Streets, Silence, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The King of Comedy, Hugo, Cape Fear, The Last Temptation, After Hours and many more.

- The main cast of the film is Leonardo DiCaprio who plays Teddy Daniels, Mark Ruffalo who plays Chuck Aule and Emily Mortimer who plays Rachel 1.

- A trivia about this film is that the title is an anagram of “truths and lies” and “truths/denial” and Shutter Island was filmed in four months during 2008. Through most of the story line, it is cloudy and the rain turns heavier as the story gets deeper. The sun only comes out in the final scenes. This is another reference to Freud, who described the subconscious as a confusing cloudy weather in opposition to the clear skies of the consciousness.

- I watched this film in February with a few of my friends at one of their houses during the night, it made the experience much more exciting and on edge as we were all together and we were in a dark room which made the experience much more impactful and the jump scares much more intense.

- What I liked about this film was that it had many different plot twists and different parts to it that you had to join up and discover on your own which made the progress much more exciting and mysterious as many different things kept coming up that would lead you to have different thoughts and ideas as to what was going on and about to happen .
